Global Citizenship, Intercultural Capability and Community Action:
At Devenish Primary School, we are passionate about developing students as Global Citizens. This is evident in all that we do but explicitly taught in Integrated Studies.
Oxfam define a global citizen as: someone who is aware of and understands the wider world – and their place in it. They take an active role in their community and work with others to make our planet more peaceful, sustainable and fairer. We use the OECD Global Competence Framework as a guide to our work in this area and employ the Gradual Release of Responsibility model as a framework for developing our students. At this point in time, we are working at a local level to encourage students to build their global competence through local community action. As such, a community action must be undertaken at some point during each Integrated Studies unit of work.
OECD Global Competence Framework
The foundation of Global Citizenship is intercultural capability. Intercultural capability aims to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to enable students to:
• Demonstrate an awareness of and respect for cultural diversity within the
community
• Reflect on how intercultural experiences influence attitudes, values and
beliefs
• Recognise the importance of acceptance and appreciation of cultural
diversity for a cohesive community.
As such, the Intercultural Capabilities are embedded in our Scope and Sequence and explicitly taught and assessed each year.
